Tips & Wisdom
Rosacea is an inflammation of the middle of the face that causes symptoms similar to acne. There are pimples, pustules and cysts, but there are no blackheads or whiteheads. “This is what differentiates rosacea from acne”, according to Cleveland area dermatologist Dr. Helen Torok.
While there are many prescription rosacea medications used to control rosacea, there is no known cure.
Prescription medications used by Dr. Torok and her colleagues at Trillium Creek Ohio Dermatology include topical and oral formulations. Oral antibiotics include Oracea, Doryx and Solodyn. A common topical treatment for acne rosacea is Metrogel, but sulfur based products may also be prescribed used. The medical professional at Trillium Creek also offer a new treatment to eliminate the appearance of facial veins (telangiectasias). This new treatment is called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
Dr. Torok also advises that it is important to pay attention to makeup and skin care products that are used by those with rosacea. People with rosacea have very sensitive skin so toners, alcohol based products and scrubs are not recommended. Ingredients like green tea, copper and benzoyl peroxide can be used safely instead.
Botox® is a leading treatment for erasing and softening wrinkles and frown lines. Botox® can be used to effectively improve the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines in a matter of weeks. In addition, Botox® can be used for excessive sweating of the underarms or feet with the effects of treatments lasting up to 12 months.
Botox® is not a filler, but a protein that relaxes underlying muscles. Botox® works by blocking impulses from the nerves to the muscles that create expression lines.
Botox® injections have been used safely and effectively for over 10 years in treating many ophthamological and neurological disorders, and more recently have been used to treat migraine headaches. Botox® is approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles and expression lines, but cannot improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin.
A small amount of Botox® is precisely injected into specific locations in the face, neck and/or lips through a tiny needle. The pain is minimal, and only a small amount of Botox® is required. You can resume normal activities immediately, but the muscle must be used actively in the first 2 hours to maximize the effect. Temporary bruising is the most common side effect, which can easily be covered with makeup.
Botox® smooths out expression lines, giving your face a more youthful and calm appearance. The effects of Botox® may be visible in 5 to 7 days. Maximum benefits are reached between 10 to 14 days.
After treatment, the skin remains smooth and unwrinkled. The untreated facial muscles contract as usual, allowing your normal facial expression to be unaffected.
The effects of Botox® usually lasts 4 to 6 months and then fade gradually. You will need to follow-up with treatments 2 to 3 times a year. Clinical studies show longer lasting effects after receiving multiple treatments over time.
Juvéderm™ is a dermal filler advance from Allergan, Inc., the makers of Botox® cosmetic. Juvéderm™ is a "next generation" smooth gel non-animal dermal filler that plumps lips, sculpts cheeks and fills in wrinkles and folds.
Juvéderm™ provides exceptional results that last up to 12 months or longer due to a special formulation that yields the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid available today. This process creates a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, creating a soft, natural look. The smooth consistency of Juvéderm™ also helps to minimize the discomfort and swelling that can sometimes occur during other injection procedures.
Juvéderm™ treatment is effective for:
- Augmenting the lips
- Filling nasolabial folds (deep folds that form from the nose to the mouth)
- Shaping facial contours (such as on cheeks and chin)
- Treating smile lines (correcting thin, superficial lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead)
Juvéderm™ is injected into the skin using a fine needle. The injection process takes only about 15 minutes and results are immediate. Downtime is minimal and you can resume your normal activities right away.
Juvéderm™ is biosynthetic and of non-animal origin. Since it is not created from an animal source, there is little chance of an allergic reaction. It has been proven to be safe and effective for all skin types and colors.
Juvéderm™ can help return your face to its natural youthful shape. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last about 6 months.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common condition that causes waxy, yellowish, scaly patches to form on oily areas of the skin such as the scalp, eyelids, ears and in the folds around the nose. In adults, it is called dandruff, while in infants it often called Cradle Cap. Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious but it may be hereditary.
Your Trillium Creek Dermatology Medical Professional will perform a thorough examination of the affected area to ensure that other conditions are not present. Treatment options for seborrheic dermatitis are numerous, including shampoos such as Trillium Creek Tar Shampoo, topical steroids and antifungal preparations
Chemical Peels are acidic solutions used to rejuvenate the surface of your skin. The solution acts on the outermost skin layers – causing them to disintegrate and be "peeled" away to reveal the underlying, unaffected skin.
There are different types of facial peels ranging from mild to deep depending on the severity of the skin conditions to be treated. Mild peels usually consist of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) while deeper peels are made from trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Your Trillium Creek medical professional has the training and experience needed to determine the best solution for you based on your skin type.
- Chemical Peels are effective in treating:
- Fine Lines and Wrinkles
- Sun Damage
- Age Spots
- Acne Scarring
- Uneven Pigmentation
Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils and the eyes and hair are protected. The solution is then applied to small areas on the skin. Most patients experience a warm sensation that usually lasts up to 10 minutes. Stronger treatments will have a greater skin reaction.
After treatment, your skin will have a healthy, rosy glow. You may experience some shedding of the skin from a light peel. The effect is similar to a sunburn. Medium to deep peels may result in swelling and blisters, followed by a peeling of the skin. This peeling generally lasts up to 1 week.
Your skin will look and feel smoother and tighter. A series of 3 to 5 light peels are usually recommended for longer lasting results. It is essential that you avoid any sun exposure following a peel. Your new skin is sensitive and therefore susceptible to injury. Applying sunblock on a daily basis is highly recommended to maintain results. Your Trillium Creek medical professional will recommend a proper skin care regimen to help you maintain your fresh new skin.

Acne is most often induced by hormonal changes. Oil trapped in the sebaceous glands form plugs in the pores of the skin, causing whiteheads. If the pore remains open, the top surface of the plug becomes dark, causing a blackhead. Bacteria thrive in this environment, causing pimples. Left untreated, acne scarring can occur. When tissues are injured, the body rushes to repair the injury site. Among the elements of the repair are white blood cells and inflammatory molecules that have the task of repairing tissue and fighting infection. When their job is done they may remain at the site of an active acne lesion for days or even weeks. In people who are susceptible to scarring, the result may be an acne scar in the form of fibrous or eroded tissue. Two types of scars exist: depressed areas and raised thickened tissue such as keloids. Acne Treatment Most over-the-counter topical treatments are for mild acne. When used according to directions, these topicals can b...

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses high-intensity pulses of visible light to rejuvenate the skin. Although it is not an actual laser, IPL works in much the same way as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular cells in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which affects the target cells to achieve the desired results. IPL differs from laser treatment in that it causes minimal damage to the upper layer of skin. OVERVIEW IPL can improve the appearance of the skin by removing broken facial veins, rosy cheeks, thread veins of the legs, mild acne, freckles, age marks, facial lines and wrinkles. IPL treats the entire surface, giving you an overall revitalized and youthful appearance. This procedure of rejuvenating aged skin with light is referred to as photorejuvenation. IPL can improve: Vascular Lesions including Spider Veins, Broken Facial Veins, and Rosy Cheeks Acne and Large Pores Brown Spots, Age Spots, and Freckles Melasma Facial Lines ...

Spider veins are a very common occurrence and most people feel that these visible veins detract from their appearance. However, with quick and easy laser treatment, there is no longer a reason you must live with this condition. OVERVIEW Spider veins can be treated effectively with laser therapy and typically disappear after treatment within a period of 4-6 weeks. TREATMENT Laser technology now permits the safe and effective removal of spider veins on the legs, face and nose. Laser vein therapy is surprisingly easy, fast, and effective. The laser light heats the vein without burning the skin above. The laser will shoot a concentrated beam of light through your surface skin that is preferentially absorbed by the hemoglobin in the vein. As the vein is heated (a process that occurs in 1/20th of a second), the walls of the vein collapse and thus blood flow is stopped. RESULTS Over a period of 4-6 weeks, the treated veins are reabsorbed by the body and disappear permanently...
Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. The term "skin cancer" refers to 3 different conditions: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. BCC and SCC are referred to as nonmelanoma skin cancers and are the most common forms of skin cancer. They are rarely life-threatening but can be locally destructive to tissue. Melanoma is generally the most serious form of cancer because it can metastasize (or spread) throughout our body quickly. Patrick M.
