About Dr. Mary Buchness, MD

Dr. Mary Ruth Buchness is a dermatologist providing medical care to patients in the New York, New York area.

Dr. Buchness studied the Biochemical Sciences at Harvard University, graduating with honors. She then completed her MD degree at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she remained and completed her dermatology residency. Dr. Buchness was board-certified and became a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology in 1986.

After residency, she became a member of the full-time faculty at New York University Medical School, where she was the Assistant Chief of Dermatology at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manhattan. While at the VA Medical Center, Dr. Buchness published many papers on skin diseases associated with sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and those associated with HIV infection. In 1988, a paper she wrote describing a novel treatment for a previously untreatable HIV-associated skin disease was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 1995, Dr. Buchness became the Chief of Dermatology at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in Manhattan, where she continued her research into skin diseases associated with HIV infection.

Dr. Buchness went into private practice at West Village Dermatology in 2000. In order to provide the best services and facilities for her patients, she opened a beautiful new office in Soho on June 1, 2009.

Dr. Buchness was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Women’s Medical Association of New York City, and the Woman of the Future Award by the New York Women’s Agenda. She is included in the Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the East, and in Castle Connelly’s How to Find the Best Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area since 2000.

Dr. Buchness is an accomplished author and speaker, presenting talks and community forums on topics which include skin cancer, psoriasis, HIV-related skin disease, other viral infections, antifungal medications, alternative medicine, cosmetic dermatology, and general skin care.

Dr. Buchness has had extensive training in the use of Botox, fillers and volumizers for the treatment of facial wrinkles and loss of volume, and laser for treatment of sun damage, blood vessels, rosacea, dark spots, and hair removal. She was one of the first physicians in New York to treat HIV-associated lipoatrophy with Sculptra , and was one of the first to be trained in the use of Artefill, a form of long-lasting collagen for the treatment of smile lines.
