Dr. Matteer was raised in Houston and received her Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University in College Station. After college, she spent some time doing research at a Yale University School of Medicine affiliate lab and at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. It was at M.D. Anderson working on research trials for colorectal cancer syndromes and in cancer prevention. She received her Doctor of Medicine from Drexel College of Medicine (formerly known as MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and returned to Houston to train in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology at Baylor College of Medicine.
