Sebaceous hyperplasia is a benign skin condition that causes small, yellow bumps to appear on the nose, forehead, and cheeks (it occurs mostly in facial areas). It is caused by enlarged sebaceous glands.
Sebaceous hyperplasia usually occurs in people middle age or older. It is not contagious.
Sebaceous hyperplasia is harmless, but your doctor will want to inspect the bumps closely to rule out other skin conditions.
How is sebaceous hyperplasia treated?
Because sebaceous hyperplasia is benign, no treatment is required.
If the bumps become irritated (due to rubbing on clothing) or are considered disfiguring, they can be treated with topical retinoids, as well as procedures such as cautery, cryotherapy, or chemical peels.
In many cases, the bumps return when treatment stops, so repeat treatments may be necessary.
