Tretinoin is a prescription-strength medication applied to the skin for the treatment of acne and fine lines and wrinkles.

Tretinoin is in a class of medications called topical retinoids that have been shown to be effective for the treatment of a variety of skin conditions.

When used for the treatment of acne, tretinoin shrinks and unclogs the pores (comedones) that are the source of acne lesions, and reduces the production of sebum, the oil secreted by the sebaceous glands. Tretinoin may be prescribed bring mild and moderate acne under control and to provide long-term maintenance of clear skin.

When used for the treatment of the fine lines and wrinkles associated with aging skin, tretinoin leads to an increased production of collagen in the dermis that makes the skin fuller and more youthful appearing.

Tretinoin can irritate the skin and increase sun sensitivity so it is important to use sun protection while using tretinoin.

It may take 8-12 weeks or longer before you see the full benefit of treatment with tretinoin.
