In the second phase of his medical career, he became Professor of Dermatology at OHSU and Chief of Dermatology at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. There he began to study psoriasis in depth, and his lab contributed to our understanding of how IL-23 and Th17 cells are key components in psoriasis pathogenesis. Personal

The “patient” that had the most effect on my work is my father. He had severe psoriasis most of his adult life. He transitioned between inpatient Goeckerman treatments at the University of Michigan hospital, etretinate, cyclosporine, and methotrexate. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1998, just a few years shy of missing out on the biologics revolution that has so dramatically changed the lives of those living with severe psoriasis. My dad also experienced 2 heart attacks and 2 strokes prior to this death, both of which I am sure were made more likely by his widespread and ever-present inflammatory skin disease.

This direct family experience with severe psoriasis allows me to be empathetic with my patients. I strive to get all of my psoriasis patients completely clear of their lesions, to improve their quality of life, and to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. It pains me that so many dermatologists undervalue and/or undertreat their patients with psoriasis, so much so, that now many of my recent lectures emphasize the importance of psoriasis as a serious disease and the importance of clearing skin disease in these individuals.
