Imiquimod Immunotherapy for Warts

Imiquimod is a topical medication available by prescription-only that may used to treat warts, including warts on the feet, hands and genital area (genital warts)

Imiquimod is available in a generic form and under the brand name Zyclara® that is used specifically for the treatment of actinic keratoses (a precancerous skin lesion) and genital warts.

Imiquimod works by activating the body's natural immune system to fight abnormal cells. The human papilloma virus (HPV) infects skin cells and causes them to grow abnormally. These changes can be detected by the immune system which attacks the infected cells.

The treated area may appear inflammed with redness, swelling, and possibly some discomfort.Follow your doctor's instructions when applying imiquimod to the skin.

The frequency, method of application and duration of treatment depends on the area being treated and the formulation of imiquimod being used.

Contact your doctor if the use of medication creates too much discomfort.
